On birdsite, there is a discussion about being on-call.
Most people on-call aren't allowed to fix the underlying issues, so they get called every day. Constant fire-fighting.
Starting at my last job, I insisted on the ability to fix the underlying issues, so I can make sure I only get paged in case of actual issues.
In the 3 years at this job, I've been paged 2x for DDoS, and once because a bgp neighbor tripped max-prefix and emailed us "URGENT!!!"
