Supporting botsin.space

Hello! A bunch of people have asked for ways to support this instance. I am currently able to cover the expenses, so please do not worry about supporting if that's not an option for you! But if you'd like to help out, I've made two ways to do that.

First, I now have a Patreon: patreon.com/muffinista

Second, you can Paypal me here: paypal.me/muffinista

ps i've put together a spreadsheet of server expenses here docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

@muffinista

This degree of transparency about hosting costs is absolutely great. Thanks very much for that!

re: Supporting botsin.space

@codesections @muffinista yeah and its on google docs instead of a plain page somewhere

re: Supporting botsin.space

@wowaname @codesections thanks! tbh it was a good exercise for me as well, it's a good thing to track

re: Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista @codesections google docs wasnt meant to be a compliment

im reluctant to visit it because it requires me to enable javascript for it

re: Supporting botsin.space

@wowaname @codesections fair enough, can't please everyone

re: Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista @codesections ah so why make an effort to

nice attitude

re: Supporting botsin.space

@wowaname just to be clear, you snarked on me and then doubled-down, and never actually asked for the thing you want, but i have the attitude. anyway here you go have a nice day gist.github.com/muffinista/454

re: Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista im sorry, i thought being an admin of an instance using decentralised, open-source, flat out better software would mean you thought about your other software usage too, but now i see that you really dont care about it at all

yeah ill try better to be nice to idiots like you

re: Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista this is real transparency, I hope that other instances will follow

@wowaname I agree that Google docs is not really the best option

What about using Ethercalc instead?
lite.framacalc.org/botsin.spac
(just delete all cells if you want to delete this spreadsheet)

Or cryptpad.fr/ although spreadsheets are still beta.

But still being so transparent is so great that I don't mind the Google docs that much.

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista wow thanks for covering this, let us know if circumstances change, like if you get 100k new bots in a day 😜

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista thanks for sharing all that info. I'd be curious to know a little more about your setup. What AWS and DO services you use and how you combine them.

Supporting botsin.space

@xuv the server itself runs on DO. Any uploaded content -- images, videos, etc -- is on AWS, as well as nightly db backups

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista rad! Just chipped in. 😃

Supporting botsin.space

@ticky thanks very much!!!

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista Out of curiosity, what's in AWS? S3 storage?

Supporting botsin.space

@mookie yeah, any uploaded files end up on s3, and also db backups

Supporting botsin.space

@mastohost,
It'd be fascinating to hear how the cost numbers in the spreadsheet above compare to your costs. (I understand if you don't have comparable numbers handy/don't want to share, though.)

@muffinista

Supporting botsin.space

There is no big secret on my accounts or something but I just can't separate the costs that well. Like a database or host server handles over 200 instances what is the cost of one of them that has 1000 users. I don't know.
It's really hard to put a price on it.
The math I do is averages per instance but it really is not an accurate number as most of the instances are on the cheapest plan. So, it's not comparable.

@codesections @muffinista

Supporting botsin.space

@mastohost @muffinista

That makes sense. I kind of figured there wouldn't be any easy way to get at comparable numbers.

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista hey! I just had a look at the spreadsheet and I was wondering on what server(s) you run botsin.space? I am thinking of running an Mastodon instance on AWS but I am very unsure about instance sizes and what Mastodon requires.

Thanks in advance and have a great weekend!

Supporting botsin.space

@kevingimbel hey! The app itself is running on Digital Ocean

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista oh I see! So only S3 or databases on AWS? Was this a cost consideration? I hope it's okay to ask so many questions :D

Supporting botsin.space

@kevingimbel ask away! I'm using S3 to store uploaded assets and backups. Everything else is being handled by the DO server. I put the assets on Amazon mostly so I could worry less about drive failures and running out of space

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista makes sense; So the ~$17 is for file storage?

And the 26$ is DO Server, Load Balancer, Databases et all? Or all in one droplet?

I am honestly impressed with the relative low price. How much CPU/RAM do you use? When I did some dummy calculations I'd always end up around $50+ on AWS.

Supporting botsin.space

@kevingimbel yeah it's all running on one droplet. I'm away from my computer so I can't look up the exact specs. It runs pretty well though, and gets a lot of traffic

Supporting botsin.space

@muffinista If you don't mind could you please have a look later? Thanks in advance!

Given that your instance has 2.3 million statuses and almost 2k users I feel like I am giving all of this too much thinking :D
