I think the fact this algorithm does not take base frequencies of the hashtags into account is a big flaw. There's lots of periodic hashtags. The volume of hashtagged toots is also very low. Although don't get me wrong - there's people who think hashtags have no use whatsoever, but there's #inktober, #mermay, #mastoart, #catsofmastodon which are very much valid and used by real people and not bots and spammers.
You can say what you want about challenges like #mermay, #inktober, #nanowrimo. But if you commit to it, if you get yourself to work (almost) every day on one skill, you may find yourself soon confortable enough to challenge yourself a little bit and get better at what you do! Which is really, really awesome.

Now here are some newer works, others can be seen in my more recent toots. I practised quite a bit in the meantime using Youtube and Craftsy as resources. I think it's especially helpful to work on your new artsy skill *every day* for longer periods of time, like one or two weeks or even a month (yay #mermay and #inktober!). It's also a good thing to carefully explore your limitations and push the boundaries. That way, you don't get discouraged too quickly.
