It depends on their working principle and materials used. Visible light is in the range of ~ 400-700nm. Then of course the laser is very directional. To make it visible from more viewing angles you need a bit of dust or fog in the air, that's whats used in laser shows like the Pink Floyd concert picture.

Even a low powered 5mw laser pointer will illuminate dust in the beams path making it visible, and these lasers are much higher powered.
